Perceived agricultural runoff impact on drinking water.

چکیده

Agricultural runoff into surface water is a problem in Australia, as it is in arguably all agriculturally active countries. While farm practices and resource management measures are employed to reduce downstream effects, they are often either technically insufficient or practically unsustainable. Therefore, consumers may still be exposed to agrichemicals whenever they turn on the tap. For rural residents surrounded by agriculture, the link between agriculture and water quality is easy to make and thus informed decisions about water consumption are possible. Urban residents, however, are removed from agricultural activity and indeed drinking water sources. Urban and rural residents were interviewed to identify perceptions of agriculture's impact on drinking water. Rural residents thought agriculture could impact their water quality and, in many cases, actively avoided it, often preferring tank to surface water sources. Urban residents generally did not perceive agriculture to pose health risks to their drinking water. Although there are more agricultural contaminants recognised in the latest Australian Drinking Water Guidelines than previously, we argue this is insufficient to enhance consumer protection. Health authorities may better serve the public by improving their proactivity and providing communities and water utilities with the capacity to effectively monitor and address agricultural runoff.

What motivates farmers to apply phosphorus at the “right” time? Survey evidence from the Western Lake Erie Basin

250 words or less): Phosphorus loadings from the Maumee River watershed have significantly compromised the Lake Erie ecosystem, as evidenced by the most severe harmful algal bloom in Lake Erie in 2015 and the shut-down of Toledo drinking water supply in 2014. Despite government payments for adoption of voluntary conservation practices, excess nutrient runoff from agricultural production remains...

Quantitative and Semi-Quantitative Determination of PPCPs and Their By-Products in Wastewater by Orbitrap MS

Introduction There is growing environmental concern regarding the health impact of trace levels of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment. PPCPs and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) detected in surface and drinking waters, as well as in treated wastewater, are an issue of increasing international attention due to potential environmental impacts.1,2 These comp...

A new model for dung decomposition and phosphorus transformations and loss in runoff

Non point-source pollution of fresh waters by agricultural phosphorus (P) can accelerate eutrophication of surface waters and limit their use for drinking, recreation, and industry. An important pathway of agricultural P transport is surface runoff, to which unincorporated dung from grazing cattle can be a significant contributor. Computer models commonly used to identify agricultural areas wit...

Catchment process affecting drinking water quality, including the significance of rainfall events, using factor analysis and event mean concentrations.

To ensure the protection of drinking water an understanding of the catchment processes which can affect water quality is important as it enables targeted catchment management actions to be implemented. In this study factor analysis (FA) and comparing event mean concentrations (EMCs) with baseline values were techniques used to asses the relationships between water quality parameters and linking...

Atrazine Prediction in Northeast Indiana

The Annualized Agricultural Nonpoint Source (AnnAGNPS) pollution model was developed for simulation of runoff, sediment, nutrient, and pesticide losses from ungauged agricultural watersheds. This article describes the first documented calibration and validation of AnnAGNPS for prediction of atrazine loading. Here, the model was applied to the 707 km2 Cedar Creek watershed (CCW) and the 45 km2 M...
